WOOKEY HOLE
Nestled in Somerset’s rolling hills, Wookey Hole Caves have been a source of wonder and intrigue for over 45,000 years. These twisting limestone caverns, carved by the River Axe, are more than just a natural marvel - they’re a living time capsule, rich with ancient history and local legend.
Archaeological discoveries show the caves were once home to early humans, and later used by the Romans for industry. In the 1930s, Wookey Hole became the site of Britain’s first cave diving expeditions, revealing even more hidden chambers still being explored today. But beyond the geology and history lies something even more mysterious…
The Witch of Wookey Hole
Legend tells of a witch who once made these caves her lair, casting curses and causing chaos across the land. As fear grew, a monk from Glastonbury Abbey was called to banish her. Deep inside the cavern, he confronted the witch, armed only with faith and holy water from the River Axe. With a final chant and a splash of blessed water, the witch was turned to stone - now immortalised in a stalagmite that eerily resembles a woman mid-curse.
In 1912, a skeleton was discovered near the site of the tale, sparking debate about whether there was some truth to the legend. Though later identified as male, the story persists - part folklore, part mystery, and entirely unforgettable.
Wookey Hole Caves are more than just a historic site - they’re a hotspot for eerie encounters. Visitors often report sudden chills, whispering voices, and the unsettling feeling of being watched. The Witch’s Stone, said to hold a strange energy, sends shivers through those who stare too long.
Paranormal teams like Most Haunted have investigated the caves, uncovering unexplained flickers, noises, and strange vibes echoing through the dark. In 2009, actress Carole Bohanan, who played the witch in a live re-enactment, described cold spots and odd sounds backstage—almost as if the witch herself was watching.
And it’s not just her. The caves are steeped in centuries of human history, from ancient rituals to Roman burials, all adding layers to their spooky atmosphere.
A Destination for the Brave
Whether you love history or ghost stories, Wookey Hole promises a thrill. But when you explore its shadowy depths, don’t be surprised if you sense something… otherworldly.
